The Manhattan Island

This island, a personal project, was designed for the purpose of expanding our counter space in our sometimes tight Manhattan apartment. Made of reclaimed solid white oak, white oak ply, and Pacifica terrazzo by San Diego-based Concrete Collaborative. Miters are used to wrap the main body of the island and hide two storage drawers. We narrowed it down to the LEM Piston Stool to serve as a discreet stool that can be stored within the narrow space beneath the countertop so that movement is not disrupted in the room.

Spanish Olive Coffee Table

I was contacted by Alexandra Abouekde – a friend and influential interior designer in Miami – that one of her clients had an interesting job for me. I met with the client at her home in Bal Harbour, and she showed me remnants of a large tree that she had cut down in her backyard along the intracoastal. The tree was a Spanish olive that she loved dearly, but it was now an inconvenience as they redesigned their home. She showed me a rough-cut slab and we discussed turning it into a coffee table. I had it sent to be kiln-dried for two months, during which time we discussed the design. We settled on a simple and pure scheme that would let the gorgeous olive do all of the talking. The slab was planed using a CNC. The large crack that formed during the drying process was secured using two Nakashima joints. The table was finished with Danish oil. Two custom-built iron legs expectantly support the solid olive slab.

John Pawson-Inspired Solid Oak Bench

Inspired by British architect John Pawson’s Miami Beach EDITION Residences work. The bench is solid oak with no exposed hardware. Finished with Rubio Monocoat. This piece now resides in Annapolis, Maryland.

Victor Locking Sideboard Cabinet

This commission by the Hotel Victor in South Beach had some heavy expectations – their interiors were recently updated by Yabu + Pushelberg. I was thrilled when I delivered this item and made a happy client.

Solid oak with no exposed hardware. Locking cabinet with leather drawer pulls. Grain matching wraps around as far as the 10′ oak slabs would take me.

Cochran Floating Vanities

Custom matching rift white oak floating night tables with leather drawer pulls.

I ended up staying in some great Airbnb’s in Los Angeles – this one was in Midtown – by way of trade. I would add features like this to their properties, increasing their value, and I’d have a free or discounted place to stay. This deal was surprisingly effective as I traveled and worked across Los Angeles in 2020. One of the best parts of these deals: I made such great friendships with my hosts that I have great places to stay whenever I visit SoCal again.

Once Upon A Time in La La Land

I had the pleasure of working as a shop designer and foreman with Eaton Designs in 2020. The studio was based in the up and coming design neighborhood of Frogtown, Los Angeles. Below are a few of the projects that I managed.

Rift white oak book case for a client in Silver Lake.
A detail shot from the kitchen we designed and installed in a lovely home along the foot of the mountains in Pasadena. We were wearing masks during this entire install not actually due to COVID, but due to the intense smoke billowing over from the San Bernardino mountains from the devastating forest fires in August/September 2020.
A floating vanity we designed and installed for a client in Highland Park. Rift white oak wrapped in an elegant polished white stone. In this business, if you don’t make good friends with the tile/stone/terrazzo guys, they can easily make your job a lot harder. Team work makes the dream work!

Of all the celeb homes and monster mansions we visited, this gorgeous home nestled into the hillside near Eagle Rock was my favorite. The image below provides the entry sequence. The experience of entering this home gave the most awesome feelings of comfort, security and serenity.

Aldama Record Cabinet, Los Angeles

The cabinet was commissioned to house a collection of 500+ records that the owners held very dear to their hearts. The final design had to be large enough for this task while matching their somewhat petite, mid-century/boho decor. Designed to subtly reveal the cover artwork of the records.
